Servants of Steel – Ironsword

I haven’t been able to do much here due to my studies at university that just takes up too much of my time. However, I did stumble upon this band and I really thought this deserved to get at least a short post here, because this is an underrated band in my opinion.

Granted, I’ve never heard of these Portuguese before but for fuck sake – their main theme is Sword & Sorcery and Fantasy and you can’t go wrong with that! ;)
And I in particular have become a huge sucker for Sword & Sorcery and especially Conan The Barbarian by Robert E. Howard, so the fact that this album is based mainly on Howard’s Conan stories got me hooked right away.

This is plain and simple Heavy Metal at it’s best and you can right away from the start tell that this is a really talanted band, with guitar riffs from the opening track “Rogues in the House” coming  at you like a flail or a mace about to crush your skull. This song is also suppose to feature Hellroadie from Manilla Road, but I must be stupid because I can’t hear him?
The vocal performance from Tann is.. yeah it’s a bit goofy as he’s going for that raw barbaric sound, but if you don’t take it too seriously you will enjoy the amazing riffs and great song writings this band has to offer. And you’ll get use to the vocals pretty soon as they are goofy in a good way, but there are some clean stuff thrown in here and there which I like and it complements the raw vocals really well!

I had to order their previous album “None But the Brave” just because this album surprised me and I have a hard time figuring out which one I like the best, but I can say for sure that I prefer the vocal performance better on the “None But the Brave”..
But I think the song writing and atmosphere overall is better on “Servants of Steel” and it’s one of those albums where you just have to listen to the entire album all the way through to get the full experience that is Ironsword, and it’s only 48 minutes long so it does not overstay it’s welcome in any way.
But if I had to chose some songs for you to go and check out I’d pick: Tower of the Elephant, Rogues in the House, Black Colossus and Son of Crom. I could really expand this list and just rank the entire album so my suggestion is to just check out the whole thing if you’re enjoying anyone of these songs in the slightest.

There’s nothing more to say other than to go and check this band out, and support the band if you like what you hear. This is a damn fine album which I dare to say that I love already after listening to it for a week or two, so I guess I’ll raise my cimmerian battle axe to you Ironsword!
There’s probably no such thing, but hey.. at least I’m trying!

Pick it up when it’s out on January 24th!

8/10
